Jericho IS Saved!

Victory is with Jericho fans, it IS saved.

This is great news… the one we have all been hoping for and working towards. I am curious about what “continuing the story of Jericho in the digital world until the new episodes return” .. I hope this is just a look at characters’ individual stories (flashbacks to before and after the bombs) rather than trying to continue the story from where it left off online.

Personally, I will keep blogging and telling my friends about Jericho to spread the word, increase the viewer-ship, although will this help if they are just depending on US ratings? Will buying the season 1 dvd from amazon.co.uk for friends’ and families’ birthdays help? I feel there are questions which CBS needs to answer … while I am happy to do whatever I can to support the show, will the efforts by those of us outside the USA be considered when CBS comes to evaluate the shows viability?

Is Jericho Saved?

There are several rumours online that Jericho has been saved. Obviously, we are all hoping this is true, but nothing is confirmed yet … so we shouldn’t stop the fight to save it.

Update: the latimes.com blog has a short interview with Carol Barbee and it seems to indicate that Jericho is back for at least 8 episodes.
“The idea would not be to bring it for eight and out, but to bring it back for eight with the hope that it would keep going,” Barbee said. “They’re making deals with the actors and there’s other logistical stuff to work out too. ‘Swingtown’ [a new drama] was supposed to take over the same stages so it’s a lot about the logistics of how to work out a schedule that works for all of us.”

Here’s hoping that it’s all true… and hope that it gets extended even further! The full story can be found in the LA Times Blog.

Jericho Season 2 Promo And Greensburg

Check out the season 2 promo created by mediaguy1441. It’s definitely a great piece of work … and here’s hoping for a season 2.

The nuts campaign has hit 38,327 lbs (17,384 kg), which is one massive amount of NUTS. But there is another campaign, definitely more worthy of attention as it’s a very real and life-impacting issue for the citizens of Greensburg, Kansas. The absolute destruction of this town can be seen in this gallery. The town was hit by a Tornado on 4 Mary 2007 which destroyed almost all of the town and took the lives of 10 people.

A Few Words From CBS’ Nina Tassler

Back in July 2006, Nina Tassler was attending the TV Press Tour 2006 and discussing closed-end and serialised dramas (and their “failures”) with critics. Of course, many of these questions were uncomfortable. However, some challenges/questions were answered.

One critic is quoted as saying, “To put it succinctly, you’re [angering] people, 2 and 3 million at a time. How often do you build that up before it really hurts you and the genre?”

Nina’s response “That’s a very legitimate question. No programmer wants to p*ss off their audience. When that happens it’s unfortunate. [With] the many different changes that are happening in multi-platform there may be opportunities to provide resolution for audiences in other platforms on shows that don’t continue on broadcast. I completely respect the question, and we respect our audience. When you build that kind of loyalty and you have an audience with legitimate questions about resolution it behooves us to find a way to provide those answers.”

America’s Useless TV Ratings System

NUTS to CBS. The executives should be ashamed of themselves for being such an incompetent business people. The cancellation of Jericho is not only a disappointment for the fans but a series of bad business mistakes which have resulted in lost potential revenue: the long break half way during the season, belief that Nielsen Ratings are representative, changing the night Jericho was broadcast on and ultimately not reversing the cancellation when it is obviously a very popular show; just look at the media coverage and Save Jericho campaigns going on since its cancellation was announced. There is obviously a lot of interest and money people are willing to spend on Jericho (take the NUTS to CBS as an example of fans willingness to spend).

Nielsen Ratings are worthless. The system is a bit like Alexa - not everything has the Alexa toolbar installed so the Alexa Rank a site has does not really reflect its popularity. Nielsen Media Research uses a similar method: Set Meters are installed in televisions of selected homes (i.e. not all homes in the USA) and these are using to collect viewing statistics. Basically, some assumptions are made to regarding the rest of the population’s viewing habits and Nielsen Media Research has some “impressive-looking” but effectively useless figures to try and impress TV networks, advertisers, et cetera, with in order to make some cash.
