Users Fly To GoDaddy From RegisterFly

The great news for today is that GoDaddy, one of the largest and most respected domain Registrars in the world, has come to the rescue of Registerfly’s users and rescued the 850,000 domain names still left with the discredited and sinking domain registrar [Registerfly.com].

GoDaddy’s intervention will come as a relief to many users who have been struggling to move their domain names away for a while now. Since about the beginning of 2007 Registerfly has gradually fallen to pieces with domain names going without renewal despite the fees being paid by its users.

The switch should run pretty smoothly and automatically for Registerfly users, which will be a welcome change to the past months of frustration they have had to endure.

Here’s hoping this is Registerfly’s final chapter and nothing like this happens with any registrar again. ICANN’s official announcement can be found here.

A final note - while I personally have never registered a domain with Register-No-Fly, a close friend of mine purchased one last year from another Registerfly user. Of course, the push did not work very well and he had no control over the domain whatsoever. The technical support was pretty rude (although they’ll have gotten worse back than they dished out). Of course, the problem never got resolved. Fortunately, my friend was able to sell the domain name and more than recoup the expenditure. Obviously, the domain name is still stuck at Register-No-Fly and on the same name servers as before.
