Getting PHP5 And Postgresql To Work Together In Windows

At work I was recently asked to help with creating a web-based tool… which sounded all great until I found out it was a IIS/PHP5/postgresql. PHP5 - no problem, IIS … sucks, very little experience with it, postgresql - never used! Unfortunately, I found that a few things had not been set up correctly…

Nildram has Gone Downhill

Nildram used to be a fantastic ISP, but what happened? Was it the purchase by Pipex? Or just a natural evolution from greatness to crapness?

There I was blaming a problem with my server/its host on the disastorously slow SSH connection I was experiencing and blaming Azureus for slow torrent downloads… but in fact it turned out to be a Nildram problem, after I finally found the time to read a few message boards. Apparently, it was due to a firmware update (on their routers, I guess) … shame they didn’t test in the first place.

Is My Web Directory Search Engine Friendly?

Whenever making a web directory, it’s improtant to consider if it is search engine friendly before claiming it is. And in all honesty, before even releasing it to the general population.

All too often, I see people promoting their directory (or directories) as “SEO friendly”, but when I visit I often find that the directory is just a standard installation of PHPLinkDirectory [PHPLD], with only the list of categories to distinguish it from the default start page (sometimes). Yes, not even a custom theme (!). This standard install often means the URLS are not “clean” and (sometimes) PR is not passed to categories & sub categories. These directories are far from “SEO friendly”.

The Best .eu Site So Far

There was a lot of excitement about the release of the .eu top level domain. Finally the EU would have its own TLD and people of the EU would be able to register domains of their choice (as long as they didn’t infringe valid trademarks).

Or so that was the theory, anyway. The reality is that it was the big dollar business people who, through various means, came out on top in the end through various dubious means.

But there is one good .eu site and made by a European-based individual too. It’s called EuridSucks.eu. It’s about what I mentioned above. So stop by there for an interesting read about the shameful release of the .eu TLD.
