Supplemental Results

I decided to check which pages of my blog are in Supplemental Results and try to figure out why so I could change the pages and (hopefully) get them out.

It was quite easy to identify why many were (in particular for my directory) … but a few took a little more effort to figure out. In the end, I found there was duplicate content due to exact copies of some pages on another site (pr08.totalunlock.co.uk). Specifically, a proxy site which also logs links publicly for every page visited by people who use it and those pages are being indexed in search engines (for what purpose the site owner set it up this way I do not know).

Users Fly To GoDaddy From RegisterFly

The great news for today is that GoDaddy, one of the largest and most respected domain Registrars in the world, has come to the rescue of Registerfly’s users and rescued the 850,000 domain names still left with the discredited and sinking domain registrar [Registerfly.com].

GoDaddy’s intervention will come as a relief to many users who have been struggling to move their domain names away for a while now. Since about the beginning of 2007 Registerfly has gradually fallen to pieces with domain names going without renewal despite the fees being paid by its users.

The switch should run pretty smoothly and automatically for Registerfly users, which will be a welcome change to the past months of frustration they have had to endure.

SEO Mistakes

After the recent Google Page Rank update, I have realised some search engine optimisation (or optimization for you Americans :P) mistakes I’ve made which have "hurt" my site in terms of potential Page Rank gain (or lack of) and also Page Rank loss. And also a friend made..

One critical issue I in particular want to write about is site wide links: they DO hurt both sites. However, quite possibly this depends upon the age and/or authority of the site, as there are many sites out there which seem to go unpenalised for incoming and/or outgoing site wide links.

Programming Ethics - phpLD

There is currently an interesting discussion going on over at DigitalPoint regarding Programming Ethics, specifically in relation to phpLinkDirectory.

People are very defensive regarding phpLD, especially when it comes to creating competition. Competition is normal, it’s going on all around us. It would be a very boring world without it. But competition also means the phpLD “elite” and their “supporters” would make less money, which I assume is why they are so defensive about their right to monopolise.

I personally look forward to a more competitive phpLD mods market. While I prefer writing my own, I admire innovation and people such as LeopardAt1 are the ones to watch out for over the coming months as they’re sure to release some great mods.

Beware When Buying A Myspace Or "Topsites/Top 100" Site

… because sometimes traffic to such websites is much lower than claimed by sellers.

A seller (whether someone is selling a site or links) will often claim a high amount of uniques, e.g. 20,000 per day, but in fact these are (mostly) not visitors to the site but rather as a result of hot-linking content (e.g. an image/flash file is used on Site B but hosted from Site A). This is a problem both so-called "Topsites" and "Myspace Resource Sites" have. Sometimes the webmaster will claim over-inflated amount of visitors without even realising that a lot of the visits are caused by hotlinking
