So far life running a directory has been an eye-opener for me. It wasn’t as easy as I thought (too much rubbish to sort through), so it’s no wonder a turn-around time of 2 weeks is placed upon free links my most directories.

I was checking through the day’s email submission notifications and, as sometimes happens, I found a reply to one of them. In this case the guy was notifying me that he’d removed the reciprocal link (big deal) and I was about to reply telling him to "resubmit but using a standard free link rather than reciprocal" but then I noticed he had hidden text on his site! (As can be seen below in the screenshots – control+a was used to highlight all text therefore revealing all including hidden text – compare the left and right pages…)

Obviously, when running a directory you’re a target of spammers. But also people will submit sites because it’s a directory (whether the link is relevant or not). This is where I see some weaknesses in phpLinkDirectory (a nice search facility so submissions with a particular keyword can be found quickly and easily would be great) and sometimes motivates me in the direction of writing my own directory software.

I can confess that running a directory is an experience. I’ll give it time and decide whether it is worth it financially or not.
