My web directory is now closed. It will not be reopened as I feel that my time is best focused elsewhere. Additionally, I believe directories have very little role in Today’s way of searching for for what we are looking for. Their usefulness has ended as search engines have evolved and results have become very relevant.
Frankly, it is quicker to type a search string in to Google, Yahoo!, Live, Ask or whatever search engine you prefer and (usually) find what you want within a few seconds than spending 5 minutes or so browsing through an often spam-filled directory.

So sorry to see you feel this way. If anything this past month it would show you just how VALUABLE a good directory is! Ones that doa a solid site review with relevant link categories are an asset to websites and SEO. Perhaps your focus was on the consumer and not the B2B aspect that is very necessary.
I have built rankings for products this year just through quality link directories that are trusted. Am on the first page of Google for all my search terms, no, but I am for a lot of them.
I hope that you reconsider and reopen your directory.

you are right, search engines have become so intelligent and well-developed it’s hard for directories to compete
