Since Poland has joined the EU, there has been a large influx of immigrants from there to the UK and these people have had to learn about and experience life in the UK. However, British people know very little about Poland, its history and culture, which is very unfortunate as it is a very beautiful and interesting country…
OK, so that has very little to do with the post title, so let’s get down to business and take a look at one of Poland’s many festivals.
“Dni Morza” is a Polish festival specific to the border city of Szczecin (also known as Stettin in German) in Poland to celebrate the city’s closeness to the sea both in terms of geography (although the city is 100KM from the Baltic sea, it is connected by the river Odra which runs all the way from Szczecin to the Baltic) and important features of the city (such as the shipyards). It is held in the summer over a period of 3 days, at the beginning of June, and takes place at “Waly Chrobrego” (”Valley Chrobrego”) which is a valley named a former Polish King from the 11th century.
The highlights of the festival are live music by famous bands, sailors recounting their experiences at sea, a fish market, beer stalls (of course..), competitions and amusement rides for the kids. But the biggest highlight is at midnight of the second day when there a boat and ship parade at the river which is followed by a big fireworks display.
So for those of you who like a little adventure and to experience new cultures, you could not go wrong by paying Szczecin a visit for the Dni Morza festival.
